My husband, Oliver and I found Cedar Key on the map, it was just a small pencil dot and we thought we would check it out. We fell in love with Cedar Key and like many we dreamed of moving here and starting a business. Our vacation was over and we went back home to work though we would vacation in Cedar Key as often as possible. At the time we lived in Memphis,TN and both worked in corporate environments. One day a few years later we decided that we had had enough of corporate world and all it entailed. We decided that we wanted to live in Cedar Key, Florida. It was a long difficult journey as we searched for a business we could operate together. It took a long 9 months to finally close on our business and then it was all ours. Now the real work started when we began to get the Faraway Inn up to snuff. It was a fish-camp style accommodation and we turned it into a family style “Old Florida” resort accommodation complete with canoes, kayaks, bikes, grills, on-site vehicle and boat parking, wifi and more.

The Faraway Inn property was once the site of the Eagle Pencil Company Cedar Mill (circa 1870 – 1896). Now the home of our 12-unit mom and pop motel and cottages along the Gulf of Mexico and a short walk to the downtown restaurants, bars, shops, boat launch and more.
